When they got home, Drew told his daughter about his new job. She was excited, or at least tried to be. She couldn't help wonder about all of her recent accident, and whether or not they would be brought up again. Her father didn’t even know about her first one, so maybe he wouldn’t think to much about it.
“So what does this new job mean?” Luna asked.
“Well,” Drew said, “I’ll have better hours, a more stable schedule.”
“So no more random babysitters all over the place?” Luna smiled.
Drew laughed at her understanding of the situation and nodded. “You’ll still have babysitters, but just on a more consistent basis. For one thing, tomorrow, Jessica is coming back.”
Luna’s eyes widened. Her father was turned away, so he didn’t see the expression on her face. Jessica was the one who helped her father her first accident - the one her father didn’t even know about. Luna wondered if she would bring it up.
After they talked, Luna's bedtime was approaching. She agreed to get back on a normal schedule and try to sleep at night and not during the day. He made her a bath and put her to bed before ten, promising to wake her up early tomorrow.
The next morning started like any other. It took Luna a second to remember their conversation from the night before. It was close to eight, a more normal time for Luna to be waking up. She would usually wake up at any odd hour, but would lay in bed all day anyway.
This time, however, Drew came and turned on the lights. Luna struggled to adjust to the light as her father approached. As she shifted in bed, she felt something strange.
“What’s wrong?” Drew asked when he saw a startled expression on her face.
Drew pulled the blanket off of her, and revealed a wet spot on Luna's pajamas and bed. She almost started crying, but her father just sighed, and helped her get her clothes off.
Luna sat at the breakfast table, her hair still wet from her bath. They ate in silence, Luna to nervous and embarrassed.
She could not figure out why these accidents where happening. She was fairly easy to potty train, but bedwetting, at least, was a completely different story. She remembered her father making her wear Pull-Ups to bed until she was about five. That was now her worst nightmare; that she would have to start wearing Pull-Ups again.
Luna was broken from her concentration when there was a knock at the door. Drew went to answer it, letting Jessica in.
As her babysitter walked in, Luna panicked. She couldn’t bare being left alone with her, it just didn’t seem right.
“Daddy!" Luna spoke up. She looked up at her father, her dark blue eyes twinkled at him.
“Say hello to Jessica first,” he said sternly. When his daughter had made her greetings, he asked, "Now what is it?" Drew looked down and asked.
"Can I have a friend over today?" Luna asked. She figured it was the perfect distraction from Jessica, and hopefully she would be allowed and not punished for her recent accidents.
"Well... I see no problem with that,” Drew said. Luna was relieved, until he said, “but you’ll have to make sure it’s okay with Jessica.”
"Fine by me," Jessica said and then turned to Drew, "It’s just the one, right?" Luna wasn't sure if that meant she could have asked for more than one playmate a day.
"So who do you want to call?" Drew asked pulling out the phone book. "Hannah or Alexis?"
"Bailey!" Luna exclaimed.
Drew looked a bit puzzled. "I didn't know you were friends with her," he said.
"We had a great time at Alexis' party, remember?" The party was at the end of the school year, and Drew did remember. Bailey was the only person Luna stayed with at the party. The two did seem to get along well but he had never heard of them being friends before that.
"Well alright," Drew said, “He made the call and Luna went off to get ready.
"Anything I should be prepared for?" Jessica asked.
"What, you can't handle more than one?" Drew smiled.
"I never even said I could handle Luna," Jessica said. “I’ve never been a babysitter, not even as a teenager.”
After Drew had left, some time went by until Luna opened the door, where Bailey Duncan stood. She was born a few months after Luna, and as still roughly the same height. She had brown hair down to her shoulders, and came to Luna's house in black sweats and a pink shirt.
Mrs. Duncan, Bailey's mother, stood behind her. She was tall with short, curly hair that was a lot darker than the big coat she was wearing.
"Hello," Jessica smiled. Drew had only left for work five minutes ago, and she was already feeling uneasy.
"Uhm... Jessica, right?" Mrs. Duncan asked as she shook Jessica’s hand. "Don’t let her play too rough. Anyway, I gotta go, so I'll pick her up around five, okay?"
Instantly Bailey and Luna said goodbye and ran into Luna's room. Luna caught her breath for a second, then turned around and said, "So what do you want to do?"
"Do you have any costumes?" Bailey asked.
"Yeah," Luna said, "why?"
"We can play dress up!" Bailey opened up Luna's closet and began shifting through the many tubs of costumes and old clothes. Luna smiled, she hadn't played dress up in such a long time.
Luna pulled some costumes out to try on for herself. She kept looking back at Bailey, who was deep in the closet.
"Hey," she said, "What are these?" Bailey pulled out something, and it put a sudden wave of shock, confusion, and fear in Luna's heart. It was a half empty package of Pull-Ups that, for the life of her, Luna could not remember being in there. "My little sister wears these to bed," Bailey threw in, "but she's in kindergarten."
"Oh..." Luna stuttered. Once the shock left her, she was able to respond. The truth made the most sense. "Those are old... I can't believe they're still here." Luna felt a bit of fear leaving her. "Wait, you're sister wears them?"
"Yeah," Bailey said, "I used to do the same thing," Bailey put the Pull-Ups back in the closet and continued looking for costumes. "I mean, I used to wet the bed, but I stopped before kindergarten."
Luna couldn’t believe that Bailey was willing to admit something like that. “Yeah,” she said, feeling less embarrassed, “Me too.”
That rolled over Bailey like nothing, as if it really was nothing to be embarrassed about. Luna thought their the topic of Pull-Ups was over, until Bailey jumped out of the closet, wearing a Pull-Up on her head.
"Look," she said, "I'm a ninja!" Bailey did look like a ninja, and Luna’s mouth shot wide open before laughter escaped it.
After that, Luna helped Bailey pull out the costumes and they took turns putting on all sorts of different outfits. Whenever Luna needed to take off her pants, she would ask Bailey to look away.
Bailey, the self-proclaimed former bedwetter, on the other hand had no trouble removing her pants in plain view. Along with her ninja "mask she added a cape, and spent several minutes with no pants on looking for something to go along with the outfit.
Luna couldn’t help chuckle, the sight was hilarious to her. It was so funny in fact that she felt the unmistakable pressure of her bladder about to release. Bailey barely noticed Luna leave the room and run into the bathroom.
When Luna returned, she simply said, “That was a close call.”
Moments later, they both lay in surreal outfits on their backs on Luna's bed. Bailey's ninja mask was thrown on the ground, and the two were relaxing.
"Hey..." Luna said, "Can I ask you something."
"What?" Bailey turned her head.
"When..." Luna took a deep breath, "When was the last time you peed your pants?"
"What?!" Bailey shouted, but she was closer to laughing. "What kind of question is that?"
"I don't know..." Luna frowned and turned her head away.
There was a moment of silence, before Bailey sensed that Luna was upset and said, "A couple years ago."
"Hm?" Luna turned back to her.
"My daddy took me to a Pirate's game in first grade. I had to go to the bathroom, but he made me hold it until it was almost over. On the way there, he said something about overtime, so we stopped to watch from this balcony thing. I couldn't help it..."
Luna didn't know what to say. The story clearly brought back some bad memories for Bailey, and Luna felt bad for bringing them back. But, for some reason she couldn’t explain, she wanted to hear more.
"What about you?" Bailey asked.
"Hm?" Luna looked at her confused.
"When was the last time you peed your pants?" Bailey asked. "I told you mine, what about yours."
"Uhm...." Luna knew she couldn't tell her the real answer; it was too embarrassing to say it was earlier that week. She decided to think of a time in first grade, but it was hard to pick one. The fact that there were so many was embarrassing enough.
"Well?" Bailey pestered.
Luna sighed, and decided to use the story of the last time before this summer. "Well," she said, "I was in first grade and-"
"Girls, come and get something to eat," Jessica chimed in. Bailey jumped up and removed her costume, just before she regained some balance and ran to the kitchen, where Luna ran towards as well.
They sat and all had something to eat, after which they returned to Luna's room. As soon as they were there, Bailey had seemingly all but forgotten about the story she had just told, and the one Luna was about to tell. Luna was relieved, but secretly disappointed.
Bailey was picked up shortly before Drew got home. He found his daughter in her room, cleaning up all the costume stuff. After greeting her, he noticed the Pull-Ups on the ground.
“What are these?” he asked as he picked those up.
Luna shrugged, “They were just in here.”
“We gotta clean up your closet then,” Drew said, “These are like two years old.” He was about to leave, but he turned around and said, “Then again, wearing these might prevent any more accidents.”
Luna’s heart practically jumped out of her body. He worst fear was coming alive. She slowly looked up at him and asked, “Really?”
Drew chuckled, relieving Luna. “Course not,” he said, “Only joking.”
Earlier that morning, the idea of wearing Pull-Ups to bed had been a nightmare, but now Luna wasn’t so sure how to feel about it. For some reason she couldn’t explain, Luna actually wanted to wear them.
Luna let out a nervous laugh. “He he,” she chuckled. “Yeah, funny.”
“So what does this new job mean?” Luna asked.
“Well,” Drew said, “I’ll have better hours, a more stable schedule.”
