The following day went by smoothly, Drew never found out about Luna's previous accident. Whenever he left the room, Luna would check the couch cushion. Jessica flipped it over so that the stain, which was practically gone, was on the other side.
Soon all that remained of Luna's embarrassing accident was her haunting memory. But to avoid any more catastrophes, Luna used the bathroom anytime she felt the urge. She figured she must have just blanked out that day and not noticed she had to go.
After lunch, it was finally nice outside after all that storming at the beginning of Summer. There weren't any yards to play in, since Luna and Drew lived in the city, but there were other kids in their building. They were mostly to old or to young but one girl, Molly, was just two years younger than Luna.
Molly's mother didn't work, and so whenever Drew couldn't get a babysitter, he would send Luna over there.
Luna decided that since she was bored of sitting on the couch and watching TV for three weeks, that she would get dressed and go over to Molly's apartment, which was down the hall from theirs.
"Sure," Drew said when Luna asked if she could go over to Molly’s. "Ask if you can stay there until dinner. I have to work until seven today."
Luna thanked her dad and ran to the phone. Molly's number was on speed dial, so she hit "3" and waited for someone to answer.
"Hello," a voice said. It was Molly's mom.
"Hey, Mrs. Raymond, this is Luna. My daddy was wondering if I could come over today and play with Molly until dinnertime." There was slight pause before the answer.
"Well, Molly is in the middle of a nap right now, so why don't you come in a half an hour?"
"Great," Luna said. "Thanks."
She said goodbye and hung up the phone. Luna got excited as she ran to her room to get dressed. She put on a cute pink shirt and red sweats. As she ran towards the door, something terrible happened.
Despite trying her best, Luna had put off going to the bathroom in all of the excitement of going over to Molly’s. Just as she was grabbing her shoes, she felt something trickling down her legs. She looked down in shock as the inseams of her pants became dark and a puddle formed beneath her toes.
She quickly dashed to the bathroom without saying a word and sat on the toilet to finish up.
Drew heard the commotion and looked up from the kitchen table where he had been sitting.
Luna's heart sank. She was able to get away with her last accident, but that was because her father hadn't been at the apartment. Now, there was no fighting it. She had wet her pants again, and her father would find out this time.
There was a knock on the door that startled Luna. "I'm fine," was her response. Obviously Drew could figure out what had happened. He would have seen the puddle and the trail from the door to the bathroom.
"Honey," he said through the door, "I'm not mad, I just want to help. Can I come in?"
Luna didn't say anything, but he came in anyway.
"What happened?" he asked.
"It..." Luna stuttered as her eyes filled with tears. "It was an... an accident."
"Well I can see that." Drew bent down and help Luna take off her shoes. "These things happen, got that?"
Luna wiped her nose and asked, "Can I still go to Molly's?"
Drew smiled, "Well I have to work, so you kind of have to. But I recommend changing your clothes first."
Luna was surprised that her father had been this nice to her, but that may have been because, as far as he knew, this was her first accident since she was in the first grade. She cleaned herself up while he scooped up her wet clothes and carried them to the sink.
Back in her room, Luna cried her eyes out for ten minutes until she finally calmed down. She had no idea why this was happening to her. She blamed the season. She always became a different person in the Summer. Sleeping in and becoming a couch potato had strange effects on her.
After putting on a pair of short, denim shorts, Luna was ready to go.
"Be sure to tell Mrs. Raymond hello for me," were Drew's last words to his daughter as she walked out the door. Being that he thought this was Luna's first accident in years, and not days, he didn't think much about it.
Luna took her time getting down the hall. Her excitement was crushed by her recent accident. She realized that Molly was entering first grade, which was the last time Luna had an accident until recently.
She hoped that maybe, if anything, Molly might do something more embarrassing to cheer up Luna. It was a weird hope to have.
When Luna knocked on the door, Mrs. Raymond answered, "Oh, hello there, Luna."
As Luna walked in, she didn't see Molly anywhere. "Am I early?"
"Oh no," Molly's mother assured her, "Molly is just having a little trouble waking up today. Why don't you go and give her little nudge."
Luna walked over to Molly's room and pushed the door open. Toys and clothes cluttered the place. Molly lay asleep under a big blanket, but it wasn't really covering much of her. Luna could see that the blanket was bright pink with a princess dressed in blue all over the front.
Slowly walking over the bed, Luna tried as hard as she could not to make any sound, until she was on the other side of Molly's strangely large bed, and plopped down next to her. The sudden thud woke Molly, who turned to see Luna facing her.
Startled, Molly fell from the bed and landed on her back, hurt but still laughing. Luna was laughing too, it was a fun trick that she played on Molly several times. At this point, Luna noticed what Molly had fallen asleep in.
Her shirt was white with a similar princess like the one all over her blanket. As Molly got up, Luna looked around the room and saw that just about everything in it was covered in girly princess and fairy tale stuff. Luna felt that she was over that sort of stuff.
"What are you doing?" Molly asked.
"My daddy has to work today," Luna answered, "So I wanted to come over to play here today."
The girls got up and went out to the kitchen where Molly's mother was fixing a snack. After they finished eating, the girls went back to Molly's room where they sat down and played for a few hours. Then there came a time where Luna decided to ask Molly a question.
'Uhm..." Luna stopped for a second because she wasn't sure if she really wanted to ask the question. She took a deep breath and mumbled, "Have you ever...you know...peed in your pants?"
Molly was instantly thrown back by the question. "Why do you want to know that?" she wondered. When she saw Luna shrug, she simply said, "Sometimes."
"Sometimes?" Now Luna was the one who was thrown back. "Like... When was the last time?"
"I don't remember," Molly said. "Maybe... Easter?"
"Easter!?" Luna practically shouted. "That was like three months ago." Luna then remembered again that Molly just turned six and was entering first grade. It was common for kids, even Luna, to have accidents at that age. And after all, she was the one who had had an accident earlier that same day.
Molly was embarrassed a little bit confused. "Well, when did you last do it?"
"Never!" Luna shot back. "I don't remember. It's for babies."
"You know..." Molly said. "Sometimes even big kids do it. When they're tickled." b\Before Luna could make a come back, Molly was on top of her tickling her.
Normally Luna wouldn't mind this. They tickled each other all the time and nothing ever happened. But after two accidents in two days, Luna wasn't taking any chances. She pushed Molly off of her, which stopped the minor scuffle. After a second, Molly started again, but Luna preventer her from touching her. "Stop," she whined, feeling like a baby as she said it.
They looked at each other and didn't say a word. After another second of silence, Luna stood up to use the bathroom. The rest of the day carried on normally. Molly completely forgot about their conversation and subsequent tickle fight.
Around seven thirty, Luna was getting homesick and missed her father. He was supposed to be there at seven to come and get her, so she sat at the table with her shoes on.
Assuming that Drew had simply gone straight home, Molly's mom called their apartment, but there was no answer. With tears in her eyes, Luna decided that her father didn't want her anymore. That he had found the stain and was fed up with the accidents.
About half an hour after he was supposed to be there, Luna chose to eat dinner with Molly and her parents, until Drew finally came to the door.
"Daddy!" Luna shouted as she ran into his arms.
"She's been missing you for hours," Mrs. Raymond said.
"Sorry, honey," Drew said to Luna, "I got caught up in an interview. The good thing is that I got a promotion so now we'll have more money."
Luna was happy. Although they weren't entirely poor, Luna always felt that he could have more, and thought that if her father didn't have to take care of her, and buy her Christmas presents and birthday presents at the same time, that he would have more.
But that wasn't the case. Drew was always more enthusiastic around the holidays than Luna was, and he always told her that he would always love her.
